Householders are being urged to put food and water out for hedgehogs as natural food sources will be in short supply when they wake from hibernation.
David Tracey, sales manager of Brambles Pet and Wildlife, said: “Members of the public are increasingly trying to help wildlife but are often confused as to what to feed wild animals such as hedgehogs. Being on the endangered list, hedgehogs need all the help they can get but feeding foods such as mealworms, peanuts, sunflower hearts, dried fruit, food with added sugar and fat levels above 15% are very harmful to hedgehogs and should be avoided.”
The brand recommends putting out its Crunchy or Meaty Hedgehog Foods for the garden mammals.
Brambles wildlife foods are available through pet wholesalers and Rosewood Pet Products.
