More than two thirds of pet owners are making personal cutbacks to ensure their pets’ needs are being met, according to a new poll.
The survey of 876 pet owners, carried out by Rosewood Pet Products in May 2022, revealed that 69% of pet owners are sacrificing personal expenditure in order to afford pet care as the cost of living rises.
Typical savings identified in the survey include shopping in cheaper supermarkets, giving up takeaways and dipping into savings. The survey also revealed that new pet owners found routine vet visits to be the most unexpected cost of pet care, followed by insurance and pet supplies.
Despite rising costs, almost half of those surveyed are still shopping for pet treats on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
Bev Panter, marketing director at Rosewood Pet Products, said: “We wanted to gain an insight into our pet spending habits, especially at a time when costs are continuing to rise.
“The results of the survey show just how much our pets mean to us, and the sacrifices we are willing to make to keep them safe and happy. However, pet owners don’t have to struggle, and there are ways to manage pet care costs without having to struggle.”
