Dog behaviourist and trainer Natalie Turton is offering free training to pet owners in exchange for them handing in any aversive dog training equipment.
Natalie, owner of Pawsitive Dog Behaviour in Nottingham, is campaigning to stop the use of aversive training equipment such as prong collars, slip leads, choke chains and electric collars. To back her campaign, she is offering a one-hour loose lead training session using positive, reward-based training to owners who pledge to give up the equipment.
Natalie believes there has been a sharp rise in owners looking for support with canine reactivity and aggression, and that the situation is escalating due to owners receiving the wrong training advice.
She said: “Things need to change in the industry and dog owners can either be a part of the problem or part of the solution. I know which one I would choose.
“I want to help dog owners who have received the wrong training advice and offer them the opportunity hand in their aversive equipment. The owners will then be offered a free loose lead training session in return.”
She added: “I really don’t want to live in a world where it is ok to cause pain and fear just to make an animal bend to our will. It really doesn’t have to be this way. Training should be rewarding for both you and your dog. If you are prepared to put the time in, you really will reap the benefits and you’ll establish a wonderful relationship with your pup. It really is worth it.”
