Boehringer Ingelheim has launched Frontpro, described as the first flea and tick treatment available over-the-counter as a chewable tablet for dogs in Great Britain.
The beef-flavured product claims to protect dogs from fleas and ticks for one month, killing fleas within eight hours, before they have the opportunity to lay eggs. Its active ingredient, afoxolaner, is absorbed into the bloodstream and is distributed throughout the body, reaching peak blood levels at two to four hours.
Frontpro is recommended for all breeds aged eight weeks or older (weighing 2kg or more) and can be given with or without food. The tablets can be sold over-the-counter by a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP).
The brand is available in a range of four different pack sizes to accommodate dogs ranging from 2–50kg. For dogs over 50kg, an appropriate combination of different or the same strength tablets should be used to meet the body weight of the dog.
A company spokesperson said: “Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to expanding access to high-quality parasite prevention for dogs, which is why we’re proud to introduce an effective new option.
“Frontpro chewable tablets provide effective protection from fleas and ticks, while complementing the regular care and advice pet owners receive from their veterinarians.”
