An industry charity has set up a new web platform to help educate wannabe pet owners about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet ownership.
The site, at petknowhow.org, includes an interactive test for new pet owners on a variety of small pet species, with a printable, personalised certificate generated for successful candidates. The underlying hope is that the prospective owner can take the certificate to their local store as evidence that they will be a responsible pet owner.
Pet Know How is a joint initiative between The Pet Charity, The British Small Animal Veterinary Association, The British Veterinary Zoological Society and the Companion Animal Sector Council, with the tests based on knowledge of The Pet Charity’s care leaflets and an interactive presentation about looking after the pet in question.
Species covered include small mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, including rabbits, Syrian hamsters, cockatiels, leopard geckos and goldfish. At the time of writing, 17 species had a full questionnaire loaded, with more to come in the following weeks.
