The team at the National Marine Aquarium celebrated World Oceans Day on June 8.
With the aquarium closed due to coronavirus restrictions, all the plans were based around free online educational activities for all the friends and family to enjoy. World Ocean Youth Ambassador, Summer Snell, was also on hand to answer questions.
Timetable for the day:
9:15am – The team will be live from the aquarium facility starting the day off with a spot of rock-pooling. Watch via the Ocean Conservation Trust’s Facebook Page.
10:30am – Inky Intrigue (squid dissection) – During this session the team will be exploring the body shape and internal structures of these amazing animals. This is a superb opportunity to watch a live dissection, learn all about interesting molluscs, and complete scientific drawings. Watch via YouTube link on WODFS website.
11am – Shark and Turtle Feed – Join the Ocean Discovery Rangers at the top of the UK’s largest exhibit as they feed these amazing animals, from Sand Tiger sharks to the aquarium’s Green Turtle. Watch via the National Marine Aquarium Facebook Page.
1pm – Time to get creative! – This is the ‘Habitats Create Challenge’. The team asks that everyone involved wears a fabulous ocean inspired hat! Viewers can watch the short instruction video and some of the tank footage to pick a habitat, then gather together craft materials and get involved. Watch via YouTube link on WODFS website.
2pm – Finishing a day of celebration with a World Oceans Day Dive Show LIVE, viewers can chat to the divers about the exhibit, maybe even while they are underwater. Watch via National Marine Aquarium’s Facebook Page.
