Unnatural chemicals in water are making fish increasingly horny, according to research from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Scientist Michael Bertram dosed male mosquito fish in an aquarium with high and low quantities of fluoxetine, the main ingredient in the antidepressant Prozac.
Michael wrote in the Science Trends: “In one-on-one mating trials, males in the high-fluoxetine treatment performed more frequent copulatory behaviour towards females than did males in the unexposed treatment.”
Fluoxetine makes its way into the ecosystem because water treatment systems cannot filter it out, reported the Daily Mirror.
