An otter with expensive tastes has been filmed eating more than £1,000 worth of koi fish from a garden pond.
The pond’s Edinburgh owners initially suspected a heron before their CCTV revealed the true culprit – an otter that had navigated through the protective netting and wiring.
Three koi worth £500 were taken in one night alone…with at least a further three eaten in recent months to the distress of the owners and leaving them out of pocket by around £1,000.
Steve Macpherson, 37, told Metro UK his family had spent a few hundred hours digging out the pond over the last two years.
He said: “There’s a heron that has visited a few times and has managed to snipe some of the fish. So when my dad’s latest batch started going missing he assumed it was the heron.
“He installed a CCTV camera to keep an eye on the heron from his laptop. And when he lost two more fish on Friday night, he went and had a look at the footage and discovered it wasn’t a heron, but an otter – with two foxes tagging along, trying to scavenge the fish.”
They are now thinking about the best way to keep the otter out.
