With growing interest in planted tanks, hobbyists are always on the look-out for what’s new or different in the hobby. Aquadip’s Joey Abrahams has hints of what retailers can stock
At Aquadip, we offer a number of ‘specials’ – where plants are grown on coconut or on bamboo sticks. Anubias on lava rock (with Java moss) is a new addition to our range, and it is likely that we shall be adding more plants to this theme of ‘plants on lava rock’.
As you can see from the image, this combination can make a striking addition to tanks – in case you were wondering, the Anubias is first tied down and then it sets roots to grow attached to the rock.
Anubias is a strong, hardy plant and easy to care for, so it thrives in most conditions. In general, it prefers lighting of up to about medium intensity.
The thick rhizome is usually about 10cm – but this must never be buried or it will start to rot.
Perfect for foreground location, Anubias does not grow larger than 10cm so is a perfect fit for most tanks.
These are some interesting facts to know about Anubias species in general:
> If the water temperature is too warm, say about 31°C, you might start to notice white spots on the leaves. A clear warning sign to lower the temperature!
> Similarly, if the leaves start to become mis-shapen, you need to lower the light intensity.
