This year’s Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) begins today (June 27) with the theme of Room for Rabbits.
The campaign, which is organised by Burgess Pet care with the backing of a number of welfare organisations and charities, is focusing on giving rabbits the best possible housing environment.
Content including vet Q&As, blogs and videos will be shared on the RAW social media pages throughout the week. Each day of the week will cover a different aspect of rabbits’ housing, such as cleaning, indoor and outdoor environments and how to adapt rabbits’ housing for the changing seasons.
Rabbit owners can also download free RAW packs containing charts, colouring sheets, bunting, a health log and guides to help owners set up and get into good habits when it comes to keeping their pets happy and healthy.
Holly Castle, senior brand manager at Burgess Pet Care, said: “Rabbits are often considered to be easy pets that don’t need much to keep them happy. This couldn’t be further from the truth and a lack of understanding of these lively, curious and intelligent creatures means that many are suffering.
“Following a surge in demand for rabbit ownership in the UK during the past two years, this year’s campaign will aim to educate owners about how to provide their bunnies with the right environment, whether that’s indoors or outdoors.
“We are delighted that RAW continues to have a positive impact, with our survey showing that 90% of vets believe that the welfare of the UK’s rabbits is improving. There’s always more we can do, and we would love as many owners as possible to get involved by following and sharing this year’s campaign.”
RAW partners include the The Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG), a coalition of experts, organisations and welfare charities who actively campaign to improve the lives of UK rabbits including the RSPCA, Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund, Wood Green The Animals Charity, PDSA, Blue Cross and the SSPCA.
