A protein-rich treat for exotic pets and wild garden ‘guests’ such as birds and hedgehogs is coming to the UK from Ireland.
Grubs is produced by Hexafly, an award-winning business that exports across Europe.
The County Meath company says it has developed ground-breaking technology that enables it to breed the black soldier fly to produce a range of natural, sustainable products.
The oven-dried fly grubs are naturally high in protein, calcium and other vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The pet treat is best served by the handful, scattered on the ground.
Apparently, some pets like the grubs live, while some prefer them dried – and some like both!
Grubs come live in 40g trays and dried in 100g and 50g resealable pouches. They are also available for zoos in 5L (1.5kg) and 10L (3kg) buckets.
Hexafly says sustainability is at the core of its mission, with almost zero waste.
“Our insect farms are vertical, low-maintenance and require less water and land compared with more traditional types of farming,” a spokesman said. “Everything is used and nothing is wasted, embracing a circular economy…
“It is Hexafly’s goal to provide solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. Feeding ourselves and our animals is a key art of the circular economy, utilising waste from other industries, in our case the brewing industry.”
