German pet food manufacturer Dr Clauder’s has created a new dog treat made from cultivated protein.
Dr Clauder’s Trainee Snack cultivated protein is the first dog treat in the world to be made using the FeedKind Pet protein ingredient, produced by US-based biotechnology company Calysta. The ingredient is made by natural fermentation of land-free carbon sources through the action of microbes, resulting in a low-cost, digestible protein with a a complete amino acid profile made using no agricultural land and very little water. FeedKind Pet is already being produced at full commercial scale.
The pet treat, which was unveiled at this week’s Interzoo event in Nuremberg, Germany, will be available to all retail and distributor partners across Europe later this year.
Alexander Gerards, managing partner at Dr Clauder’s Solutions for Pets said: ‘’Novel proteins produced with respect for nature, which are vegetarian, nutritious and tasty are well sought after. We are happy that with FeedKind Pet we were able to develop a dog treat that delivers just that: vegetarian, complete amino acid profile and delicious. Dr Clauder´s Trainee Snack cultivated protein is a true innovation meeting market demand.
Herman Sloot, vice president commercial development at Calysta, added: “Dog owners have high expectations for their pet’s food and are increasingly conscious about the source, quality, and safety of the ingredients used.
“For the first time, Europe’s pet food sector has the option to choose a high-quality source of protein that is nutritious and kind to the environment. Calysta is now producing at significant scale, and FeedKind Pet is approved for use in pet foods in the EU. We are excited Dr. Clauder’s is introducing a snack featuring FeedKind Pet protein as we set a new standard for dog treats – one that prioritises both taste and health, while looking after our planet.”
