A man in China was shocked after the ‘puppy’ he bought cheaply from a dog dealer turned out to be a bamboo rat.
Speaking to local media, he said that as his pet began to grow, he started to have doubts over its authenticity and shared pictures of it on China’s social media platform Weibo for advice.
Small, with large ears and short legs, the animal was identified as a bamboo rat, a rodent commonly found in south China, Myanmar and Vietnam.
They are a source of food for the Chinese and can be found cooked in markets across the country, reports the Daily Mirror.
The man reportedly gave the rat away as he did not know how to care for it.
