Two French friends have joined forces to launch a cat food made from insects and bring it to the UK.
Madeleine Morley, 26, and Paola Teulières, 25, both completed a master’s degree in environmental sciences at Imperial College London before embarking on their sustainable entrepreneurship pet food journey.
They launched Tomojo pet food company in 2017 and fed French dogs with 10 tonnes of insect food in 2019.
Now the company is launching what the pair believe to be the world’s first insect cat food. The food has been developed in association with veterinary nutritionists, designed to minimise its environmental impact while providing a healthy and traceable diet.
Tomojo pet food is made in Mayenne, France, with insects from Holland and additional natural ingredients including peas, lentils, aromatic herbs, potatoes, chickpeas, brewer’s yeast, chia seeds, beet pulp and spirulina.
The plant-based powder is mixed with the insect flour to make dough, which is extruded and then cut into kibbles. These are packaged in biodegradable packaging.
Éric Charles, the vet who helped to formulate the recipes, said: “The Tomojo cat recipe is a perfect association between the knowledge acquired in feline nutrition and the drive towards new sustainable sources of protein for our planet.”
