Welsh pet food company Happy Hounds has recalled a number of its frozen raw dog food products because of the possible presence of salmonella.
The Food Standards Agency was alerted after the firm based in Cwmbran took what it described as a ‘precautionary step’ of recalling the products listed below:
> . Frozen Beef Kidney 1kg, batch code 962
> . Frozen Whole Heart, batch code 962
> . Frozen Chicken and Beef Sleeve 1kg, batch code 1344/962
> . Frozen Lamb and Beef Sleeve 1kg, batch code 962-966
> . Frozen Diced Heart 1.5kg, batch code 962
The Food Standards Agency said: “The products listed may contain salmonella. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.”
Point of sale notices are being displayed in all retail stores selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.
Happy Hounds Wales Ltd issued its own customer notice stating: “These products were collected at the same time as our unreleased tripe product containing salmonella. This was detected as part of an ongoing testing program. The batch number can be found on the white and blue label on the sleeve of the product. Customers who bought the affected products through our delivery service will be contacted. No other batch numbers are affected by this product recall.
“Check if you have bought the affected batch of the beef products detailed with the corresponding batch number and return the products to Happy Hounds or shop for a full refund.”
