Next week is Hedgehog Awareness Week, running from May 1-7.
The annual event is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and aims to highlight the problems that hedgehog face in modern environments.
The public will be encouraged to help by creating gaps in fences so hedgehogs can pass through, by building or purchasing shelters and by leaving out water and food for the animals to feed on. In addition, they will be asked to avoid using pesticides and poisons, ensure there is an easy route out of ponds and pools and to take extra care when mowing lawns.
Specialist food firm Brambles Pet and Wildlife are advising retailers to stock up on Hedgehog Food ahead of the awareness week.
Sales manager David Tracey said: “We’re getting ready for a bumper week of activity on social media during the week where we’ll be giving away over £1,000 worth of wildlife food and associated products for wildlife rescues in our popular giveaways.
“There’s always a huge increase in demand for our food during this period so we recommend retailers ordering much more of our hedgehog food than normal.”
BHPS is hoping to raise £2,000 during Hedgehog Awareness Week 2022, via an appeal at: www.justgiving.com/campaign/HAW22
