Retiring rugby referee Nigel Owens MBE has teamed up with pet food brand Burns and the charity Street Paws to help feed thousands of homeless dogs this Christmas.
The former international referee, who owns two dogs Bella and Aira, said he was ‘immensely proud’ to join the cause, which aims to support the estimated 50,000 homeless dogs currently living rough with their owners.
Nigel said: “Whilst most family canine members are enjoying a festive time at home, there’s an alarming number of homeless people with beloved pets that are not enjoying such comforts.
“As Christmas fast approaches, we’d love to ensure that as many dogs as possible receive a Christmas festive feast that is nutritious and fills its belly. Every dog deserves a Christmas dinner.”
The impact of covid-19 has led to a record 320,000 people now classified as homeless in the UK and, for many, a dog is their primary source of comfort. But with only 10% of shelters across the UK accepting homeless people and their dogs, it makes it very difficult for those with a canine companion to stay safe.
The charity Street Paws, in partnership with Burns Pet Nutrition, is working to ensure that homeless dogs are cared for and fed during the festive period.
Burns is set to donate up to 500 free meals and has also arranged a special festive feast including its Penlan Farm wet food, organic chicken dry food and turkey treats for those with dogs on the streets.
Michelle Southern of Street Paws said: “We are working tirelessly with our partners Burns Pet Nutrition to ensure that homeless dogs are cared for and fed during the festive period.
“Street Paws is hoping this campaign with Nigel Owens will spark awareness of the devastating plight facing thousands of homeless people and loyal dogs sleeping rough on our UK streets.”
John Burns of Burns Pet Nutrition said: “Burns already supports hundreds of pets and animal rescue charities across the UK through our charity donation programme. We also donate 25% of all profits to charitable causes to help both pets and people to live better lives.
“Our donation to Street Paws this Christmas will go some way to helping dogs and their owners who are sadly living in very difficult circumstances on the streets.”
