A dog that went missing while on a walk on the Dorset coast has been found on the beach – after 45 days.
Shadow, an 18-month-old shar-pei, slipped his harness while walking with his owners, the Whiting family.
The pet, believed to have fallen 500ft from the cliff top, had managed to stave off hunger by eating sticks, stones and seaweed and was taken to Bredy Veterinary Centre for surgery on his stomach.
A fracture did not heal well, so his owners launched a JustGiving page to raise the money for Shadow to see a specialist orthopaedic surgeon to realign the bone. And when the surgeons at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists in Ringwood, Hampshire, heard about his story, they immediately offered to perform the surgery at a reduced price.
Owner Amber Whiting said: “When we had the call to say he’d been found we couldn’t believe it. He was so skinny my husband didn’t recognise him.
“We quickly went from the massive high of finding him to the shock and upset of seeing just how much weight he had lost and the state of his leg.
“Now that his leg has been fixed we feel he can truly start to heal up and get well again. We are so grateful that he’s been given so much love and support from people. Thank you so much for helping us with Shadow.”
