Wrens are the most common birds in the UK, but many people think differently, according to a survey by Roamwild UK.
The product innovation brand spoke to 1,000 consumers, asking them two questions on British birds: what is the people’s favourite and what do people think is the most common?
The robin came out on top as the people’s favourite, chosen by 35%, 20% more than the second-placed ranking, the blue tit, with 15%. In third place was the goldfinch, with 12%.
The sparrow was seen as the most common bird, having been chosen by 29%, with the blackbird and wood pigeon jointly second with 13%.
However, data from the British Trust for Ornithology suggests a very different picture.
The wren is believed to be the UK’s most common bird, with an estimated 8.6 million breeding pairs. The robin places second on this data with 6.7 million and the chaffinch third with 6.2.
Only 1% of the consumers surveyed thought the wren was the most common.
