Packaging supplier Mondi is investing nearly €65 million in three packaging plants in Europe in order to meet growing demand for sustainable pet food packaging.
Production capacity is to be increased at plants in Korneuburg in Austria and Halle Steinfeld in Germany in response to increased pet ownership in Europe and customer requests for recyclable packaging.
The project is part of the company’s €1 billion capital investment programme to accelerate growth in sustainable packaging. Work has already started at Korneuburg, including investment in new machinery and an expanded production area, increasing capacity for stand-up pouches for wet pet food.
The group is also investing in new machinery at the two sites in Germany to increase production capacity of sustainable pre-made bag solutions for pet food, enabling customers to switch from multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging to more sustainable alternatives such as mono-material recyclable stand-up pouches and paper-based pre-made bags.
Dirk Gabriel, chief operating office for consumer flexibles at Mondi, said: “We take pride in being an innovative, agile partner for our customers. With this investment, we continue to take the lead in packaging solutions that are sustainable by design, especially in the pet food industry.
“With these projects, we’re increasing operational efficiency and reducing our own energy consumption while also connecting our production network.”
