Peregrine Livefoods has warned retailers to expect possible supply shortages of frozen rodents following the recent product recall of mice from another supplier.
Specific batches of frozen mice from Monkfield Nutrition were subject of a recall notice from the Food Standards Agency due to fears over salmonella contamination.
In a statement, a Peregrine Livefoods spokesperson said: “PLT Frozen Foods has continued to test negative for salmonella” but added: “The product recall has already created a shortage of frozen rodents within the UK which we are working hard to combat. Whilst we are currently increasing our supply gradually, the process of growing-on colonies of rodents can only be accelerated so far. Regrettably, this means most product lines will face some shortages in the coming weeks and potentially months.”
The company warned that it “may need to reduce unusually large orders according to what we are able to supply.
“Whilst we understand the necessity of keeping frozen foods well-stocked, the only way to ensure that every customer has access to essential products is to only fulfil orders that fairly represent their previous ordering history.”
The company added: “This shortage will extend well into next year Hopefully, the shortage shall begin to alleviate once the affected suppliers can import new stock, but understandably, travel and more rigorous testing procedures mean this will not happen immediately.”
