A pet shop owner whose store was burgled at 2am has praised the police.
Dawn Worton, from Ingleby Pet Supplies, in Thornaby, told Teesside Live the Cleveland force’s response was ‘absolutely brilliant’ when a thief broke in during the early hours.
The suspect was caught on CCTV smashing the door of the shop before sneaking inside.
“The police were great,” said Dawn. “I couldn’t fault them. I rang 999 as soon as the alarm went off and they were there within minutes. They were here when I got here. Six police officers were here and three vehicles.”
SMASHED
The shopkeepr was sent an alert to her mobile phone and was able to watch from her home as the intruder entered her business.
“He smashed the window and went straight to the till looking for money,” she said. “He grabbed a tub with some badges in for Yarm Cat Rescue.
“The actual item stolen is not of great monetary value. It’s probably worth £10 or £20. But it’s the clean-up. It’s wasting my time, police time. It’s infuriating.”
The retailer said she felt police were taking the incident ‘seriously’ and their response was ‘absolutely brilliant’.
“You can’t fault them,” she said.
It is the second time the Thornaby pet shop has been targeted, with thieves stealing a till, cash and charity box in a 5.30am raid in October.
