A pet cockatoo has been banned from eating her favourite treats after getting fatty liver from over-indulgence.
Cindy enjoys nothing more than munching on a packet of cheese and onion crisps or sunflower seeds, as well as oven chips or toast and cheese, as an occasional treat from owner Brian Lambert.
But the nine-year-old grey and pink Australian Galah cockatoo was taken to Gilmoor Vets in Gilesgate, County Durham, because she was suffering from sickness and diarrhoea.
Brian revealed her full dietary habits when X-rays and blood tests revealed Cindy was suffering from gut or liver problems.
The clinical director of Gilmoor Vets, Deborah Stafford, has recommended a new diet for Cindy and is warning bird owners about the danger of feeding too many sunflower seeds and other treats.
She said: “We are carefully changing Cindy’s diet to a complete balanced diet in pellet form and her health is really improving.
“She is much better now and even the colour of her feathers has improved with the right diet.”
