Robotic sensor fish, as they’re known, have been measuring and collecting data on live fish for years.
Developed by the U.S Department of Energy, they’re now going to be sold across the world to hydroelectric dams that want to better understand their relationship with the ecosystem they inhabit.
At 3.5in long, the sensor fish are the same size as many salmon when they encounter hydroelectric dams for the first time. While each sensor fish typically takes less than two minutes to pass through the dam, during that time period it is taking approximately 2,000 measurements per second.
It is hoped they will provide information to help engineers design more fish-friendly turbines going forward, reports the Greenwire website.
